Steps to Water: The Ancient Stepwells of India
Morna Livingston
A photographic and historical study of one of India's most extraordinary and least-known architectural forms: the stepwell. From the fifth to the nineteenth centuries, communities across western India built deep, stepped stone structures to reach and store monsoon water through the long dry months — and turned pure utility into astonishing architecture, with lattice walls, carved columns, decorated towers, and dense sculptural programs descending story after story underground. Morna Livingston, who spent some fifteen years researching and photographing them, traces the form from its Hindu origins through its flowering under Muslim rule to its decline under British administration, and reflects on the wells' preservation and continuing life in Indian communities. Illustrated with luminous color and quadtone plates and measured drawings, it is both a serious record and a beautiful object.

The author
Morna Livingston is an American documentary photographer and educator specializing in architecture and cultural landscapes. She devoted roughly fifteen years to researching and photographing India's stepwells, and the book reflects that sustained fieldwork — it is the product of a photographer who has climbed down into these structures repeatedly, not a quick survey.
The book
Published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2002, Steps to Water combines Livingston's photographs and drawings with a historical narrative tracing the stepwell from Hindu origins through the Muslim period to British-era decline, closing on questions of use and preservation.
How it reads
As a fine architectural monograph: authoritative text paired with genuinely revelatory images of spaces most readers will never have seen. It struck a chord ahead of the wider revival of interest in stepwells, and remains among the best single-volume introductions. The emphasis is architectural and aesthetic rather than deeply anthropological.
For more context
Recent conservation coverage of stepwells and broader histories of Indian architecture extend the subject.
