Drawing from Observation: An Introduction to Perceptual Drawing

Brian Curtis

A studio textbook for the introductory drawing course, built on the premise that drawing is first of all a way of seeing. Brian Curtis, who wrote, illustrated, and designed the book over five years, balances hands-on technique with the perception theory behind it, arguing patiently for the long-term value of learning to render the physical world as it actually appears to the eye rather than as we assume it looks. Generously illustrated with student work from his own university drawing classes, it walks beginners through the fundamentals — line, value, space, proportion, and the stubborn habits of mind that get in the way of accurate seeing. Clear, thorough, and grounded in the classroom, it has become a durable standby for foundation art programs and self-directed learners alike.

The author

Brian Curtis is an American artist and longtime studio-art professor (University of Miami) who developed this book out of his introductory perceptual-drawing course. He wrote, illustrated, and designed it himself over roughly five years, and its examples are drawn largely from his own students' work, which gives it the texture of an actual classroom.

The book

Drawing from Observation: An Introduction to Perceptual Drawing was published by McGraw-Hill Higher Education around 2001–2002 and has gone through multiple editions and translations. It pairs practical instruction in line, value, proportion, and space with the perceptual theory that explains why observational drawing is hard and how to get better at it.

How it reads

Methodical and encouraging, closer to a well-structured course than a picture book. Its blend of technique and cognitive theory about seeing is what distinguishes it from more purely how-to drawing manuals, and it wears its academic origins openly.
