David Moulton's Audio Lecture Series, Volume 2
David Moulton

Volume 2 of David Moulton's *Audio Lecture Series* continues his spoken-word course on the craft and science of audio for engineers, producers and musicians. Rather than a printed manual, the series presents Moulton lecturing directly to the listener, drawing on decades of studio work and college teaching to explain how sound, hearing and recording technology actually behave. Across the series he builds listening skill and conceptual understanding hand in hand — the same philosophy behind his well-known *Golden Ears* ear-training program. This volume forms part of that progressive curriculum, aimed at anyone who wants to move beyond pushing buttons to genuinely understanding and hearing what happens to sound in the recording process.

The author
Dave Moulton is a recording engineer, educator and acoustician who worked with artists ranging from the Concord String Quartet to Sonny Rollins, taught at SUNY Fredonia and Berklee (where he chaired Music Production and Engineering), earned a Grammy nomination for classical engineering, and is a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society. He created the Golden Ears ear-training course and wrote Total Recording.
The book
Moulton's Audio Lecture Series was developed from his teaching and issued as audio programs so students could learn by listening. Volume 2 sits within this sequence of lectures on the fundamentals of audio, hearing and recording practice.
How to read it
As an audio course centered on training the ear, it rewards focused listening on decent monitors rather than passive playback, ideally worked through in order with the other volumes. Its grounding in acoustics and perception ages well even as equipment changes.

Best taken alongside the rest of the series and Moulton's Golden Ears and Total Recording.
