David Moulton's Audio Lecture Series, Volume 3: Equalization — Front Cover
Front Covermain image

Volume 3 of David Moulton's *Audio Lecture Series*, this installment focuses on equalization — the shaping of sound by boosting or cutting specific frequency bands, one of the most fundamental and misunderstood tools in recording and mixing. Delivered as spoken audio lectures rather than a printed text, Moulton's series distills decades of teaching at the college level and in the studio into clear, example-driven explanations aimed at engineers, producers and musicians who want to hear as well as understand what they are doing. This volume trains the ear to recognize what different frequency regions sound like and how EQ decisions change a recording. It speaks to anyone serious about developing real listening skills behind the console.

The author

David (Dave) Moulton is an American recording engineer, educator and acoustician who began in audio in the 1970s, recording artists from the Concord String Quartet to Sonny Rollins, and later chaired the Music Production and Engineering department at Berklee College of Music. He was Grammy-nominated for classical engineering and is a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society, and is best known for the Golden Ears ear-training program and the textbook Total Recording.

The book

The Audio Lecture Series grew out of Moulton's classroom teaching, made commercially available on audio media so listeners could learn by ear. Volume 3 concentrates on equalization: what frequency bands sound like and how to work with them musically.

How to read it

Because it is an audio program about listening, it is best used actively — with good headphones or monitors, pausing to hear the examples — rather than treated as background. The fundamentals of ear training and EQ it teaches remain valid regardless of changing gear.

For more context

Pair it with Moulton's Golden Ears course and the other volumes in this series.
