The Gracie Way: An Illustrated History of the World's Greatest Martial Arts Family
Kid Peligro

*The Gracie Way* is Kid Peligro's illustrated history of the Brazilian family that turned a little-known grappling style into one of the world's dominant martial arts. Through archival and action photographs and short narrative profiles, it follows the clan from the 1930s — when the frail Helio Gracie adapted Japanese jiu-jitsu into a leverage-based system a smaller person could use — through the legendary vale tudo challenge matches in Brazil, to Royce Gracie's era-defining victories in the first Ultimate Fighting Championships and the new generation of champions like Rickson and beyond. Part family album, part martial-arts chronicle, it's an affectionate insider's account. It speaks to jiu-jitsu practitioners and fans of combat-sports history.

The author
Kid Peligro was a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, journalist and prolific author who became one of the sport's best-known chroniclers in the English-speaking world, closely connected to the Gracie family and their circle. That access gives the book its intimacy — and means it is written from within the family's own perspective.
The book
Published in 2003, The Gracie Way combines photographs spanning seven decades with profiles of the key figures — Helio, Carlos, Rickson, Royce, Renzo, Royler and the younger champions — tracing the art's journey from Brazilian streets and challenge matches to global prominence through the UFC.
How to read it
Read it as a celebratory, insider history rather than a critical or independent one: it is warm toward its subjects, and the Gracies' many rivalries and the family's more contentious moments get a gentle telling. For the fuller, sometimes disputed history of jiu-jitsu's origins and the family's feuds, supplement it with outside accounts. As a photographic record and introduction, it delivers.
For more context
Pair it with the Gracies' technical volume Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Technique.
