Persuasions: The Jane Austen Journal, No. 46

Persuasions: The Jane Austen Journal, No. 46 — Front Cover
Front Covermain image

The annual print journal of the Jane Austen Society of North America — and one of the liveliest examples of a scholarly journal that genuinely welcomes non-scholars. Each issue gathers essays drawn largely from JASNA's Annual General Meeting, ranging across Austen's novels, her world, and her ever-expanding afterlife in film, fiction, and culture. The writing is peer-reviewed but deliberately readable, pitched to academics and devoted Janeites alike. This is issue No. 46. For anyone serious about Austen — or curious how a single novelist can sustain such a vast, warm scholarly community — it is a rich annual dispatch from the field of Austen studies.

The journal

Persuasions is the annual, peer-reviewed print journal of the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA), sent to members each spring. Each issue collects papers from the society's most recent Annual General Meeting alongside other essays on Austen's writing, her era, and her legacy across literature and media. Its hallmark is range and readability — scholarship written to be enjoyed by general readers as much as by academics.

The context

JASNA also publishes a separate digital journal, Persuasions On-Line, released each year on December 16 — Austen's birthday — a nice measure of the affectionate, almost calendrical devotion the author inspires. Together they form one of the most active bodies of writing around any single novelist.

How to read it

As a yearly cross-section of Austen studies, scholarly and popular at once — a place where a close reading of Emma might sit beside an essay on Regency dress or the newest screen adaptation. No. 46 is one volume in a long, ongoing conversation.
