Timberline and Shoreline

A recent anthology from the Maine Poets Society, gathering the work of its members in celebration of poetry's long life in the state. Maine has an unusually deep bench of poets for its size, and collections like this one are how a regional literary community takes its own pulse — a cross-section of voices, established and emerging, writing out of the woods and the coast the title evokes. As a very new book it has not yet gathered much outside commentary, but its value is exactly that of the living anthology: a snapshot of who is writing in Maine now, and what they are writing about.

The book
Timberline and Shoreline is an anthology published by the Maine Poets Society, a long-running statewide organization dedicated to poetry and to its members' work. Anthologies like this are the society's characteristic form — periodic gatherings that document the community's current membership and range.
The context
Maine sustains a remarkably rich poetry culture for a small state, from nationally known figures to a dense network of local societies, reading series, and small presses. A members' anthology sits at the grassroots of that ecosystem: less a curated canon than a democratic cross-section.
How to read it
As a contemporary snapshot rather than a settled selection — valuable for its breadth and its of-the-moment quality. Because it is so recent, it has little critical footprint yet; its interest is documentary and immediate.
